Frequently asked questions about project management and turnkey steel deliveries

What does project management in steel construction projects entail?

Project management in steel construction projects involves planning, coordinating and following up on all phases of the project – from design to final assembly. This includes managing progress, finances, quality and communication between all parties involved. An experienced project manager ensures that delivery is carried out according to agreement, and that challenges are handled early in the process.
A total delivery means that one supplier is responsible for the entire delivery of steel structures. This includes design, production, logistics and assembly. By concentrating responsibility with one party, the need for coordination between multiple suppliers is reduced, which provides better control, fewer interfaces and a more efficient construction process.
Total delivery provides better overview and fewer parties involved, which reduces the risk of misunderstandings and delays. It also provides more predictable progress and economics, since one actor is responsible for the entire delivery. In addition, communication is easier, and decisions can be made faster when all links are brought together.
Progress is ensured through structured planning, clear milestones and close follow-up throughout the project. This involves coordination between design, production and installation, as well as ongoing control of progress plans. Good communication between all parties is crucial to avoid delays.
The project manager acts as a link between the customer, production and other suppliers. The role involves coordinating activities, following up on progress, managing risk and ensuring that the project is delivered according to requirements and expectations. A good project manager contributes to efficient implementation and fewer deviations.

Risk is managed through systematic assessments early in the project and ongoing follow-up throughout. This includes technical assessments, progress risks, logistics and HSE. By identifying potential challenges early, measures can be taken before they affect progress or quality.

Fewer interfaces mean that there are fewer actors to coordinate in the project. This reduces the risk of misunderstandings and responsibility gaps between suppliers. When one actor is responsible for multiple phases, communication becomes more efficient and the project is easier to manage.

Total delivery is often advantageous in larger or complex projects where coordination between many disciplines and deliveries can be demanding. By consolidating responsibility with one supplier, you get better control and less administration. In simpler projects, shared deliveries can work, but often involve higher risk.

Good project management helps ensure that all phases of the project are carried out according to specifications and standards. It ensures that errors are detected and corrected early, and that quality is maintained throughout the process. The result is a more robust and reliable construction.

It is important to consider experience from similar projects, capacity to handle the entire delivery and ability to coordinate complex processes. In addition, the supplier should have good routines for quality assurance, risk management and communication. A supplier with comprehensive expertise provides greater security in implementation.
